OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Association of Division III Independents named UC Santa Cruz men's basketball center Will Crain, its Male Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of February.
Crain, a freshman from Petaluma, California, earns Student-Athlete of the Month honors for the first time after averaging 21.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.3 blocks per game on 60.7 percent shooting. The one-time Player of the Week during the month recorded three double-doubles during a 3-1 month for the Banana Slugs, scoring a career-high 28 points with five assists, five steals and six blocks in the season finale against West Coast Baptist on February 20th. Crain scored 19 points in a win over fellow AD3I member Illinois Tech on February 13th, helping lead UC Santa Cruz to a school record for most Division III wins in a season. The center secured a career-high 17 rebounds, one shy of the school record, against Whittier adding 18 points in the process. Crain finished the season with 344 points, the most for a UC Santa Cruz freshman in eight years.
