ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – Anthony Mosley Jr. of Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, Ill.) and Emily Martin of Elizabethtown College (Elizabethtown, Pa.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending December 18.
Mosley Jr., a 6-2 junior guard from Chicago, averaged 19.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 2.6 steals, and 1.0.blocks per game in a 3-0 road week for the Illinois Institute of Technology (6-3). Mosley Jr. produced a double-double with 23 points (8-of-9 FG, 4-of-7 FT, 3-of-3 3FG) and 10 assists, while adding five rebounds, three steals and a block in the Scarlet Hawks' 90-75 win over Fontbonne on Monday. He had nine points (4-of-8 FG, 1-of-2 FT), six rebounds, five assists, and three steals in a 68-62 win over UC-Santa Cruz on Saturday, then completed his week with 25 points (8-of-11 FG, 7-of-9 FT, 2-of-3 3FG), five rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks in an 81-69 victory over Pacific Lutheran on Sunday. For the week, Mosley Jr. shot 71.4 percent (20-28) from the field, 66.7 percent (12-18) from the foul line and 71.4 percent (5-7) from three-point range. For his efforts, Mosley, Jr. was also named the Association of D3 Independents Player of the Week.
Martin, a 6-0 senior center from Lancaster, Pa., recorded a 20-20 double-double in Elizabethtown's (8-1) only game of the week. In the Blue Jays' 57-49 victory over Muhlenberg on Saturday, Martin scored 24 points, pulled down 23 rebounds, and added five assists, two steals and three blocks. She shot 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from the field and 12-of 14 (85.7 percent) from the free throw line. The 23 rebounds were the fourth-highest single-game total in NCAA Division III this season. Martin currently ranks among the nation's leaders with seven double-doubles (tied 4th), 13.9 rebounds per game (tied 7th) and 3.11 blocks per game (tied 11th). Martin, whose 12 free throws made set a career high, was also named the Landmark Conference Player of the Week.
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. This is the third season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
