HANCOCK, MI – From start to finish, the Finlandia University Lions handled the Crusaders, dealing Maranatha a 94-47 loss on Friday evening.
The Lions simply dominated the first half, bolting out to a 58-26 halftime lead with a blistering 56% shooting from the field.
After falling behind 11-2 in the first three minutes of action, layups by freshman guard Courtney Dunn (Oshkosh, WI), and Erin Steuerwald (Whitewater, WI), and a pair of free throws by freshman Rachel Wells (Danville, IL) cut the margin to 14-10 with 15 minutes to play.
But the next few minutes was simply a display of sheer domination, as Finlandia built up leads as much as 31 points, before settling into a comfortable halftime advantage.
Finlandia had five players in double-digit scoring, with their leading scorer's; Hailey Gervais (30 pts., 53 FG%) and Marissa Burke (21 pts., 47 FG%), pacing a team-wide effort that took 72 shots while limiting the Crusaders to 31% from the field and just one three-pointer in the game.
Maranatha was led by Dunn, who posted 14 points, and three steals, while senior guard Allison Schulz (Chillicothe, IL) had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Steuerwald also had an efficient game, with 12 points, on 5-9 shooting from the field, and 7 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Maranatha was without leading scorer, Laci Peterson for the second-straight game.
The Crusaders are excited about a home matchup on Friday, January 31, at 8:00 p.m., against Mount Mary.
